    All About the Working Labrador

The working line Labrador is a world apart from the chunky, slow show-line dog you see in pet homes. Bred from British field trial and American working bloodlines, our Labradors are athletic, driven and brilliantly biddable.

Expect a lean, fast, intensely focused dog with the natural retrieving drive that built the breed — and the soft, stable temperament that has made the Labrador the world's most trusted assistance and detection dog.

These are the dogs you see deployed in explosive and narcotics detection, mobility assistance, guide work and elite gundog competition — and they make exceptional family dogs for active, engaged homes.

    Know the difference

British Field vs. American Working Line

Working Labradors split into two distinct traditions, each refined for a different style of gundog work. We breed and work with both lines.

    British field line Labrador retrieving

    British Field Line

    The driven, biddable gundog

British field trial Labradors are bred under the UK Kennel Club working test system — judged on quiet, controlled, biddable retrieving over long distances and complex marks. The result is a focused, calm-in-the-house dog with extraordinary handler sensitivity and a softer drive register that suits family life beautifully.

    Key Characteristics

    • Calm in the home, driven in the field
    • Smaller, leaner frame than show-line dogs
    • Excellent off-switch — true house dogs
    • Best for gundog work, assistance and detection
    • Soft, biddable, deeply handler-sensitive
    • Bred to UK field trial standards
American working line Labrador in athletic drive

    American Working Line

    The high-drive retrieving athlete

American working Labradors are bred for the demanding US hunt test and field trial circuit — judged on long-distance marks, blind retrieves and water work in tough conditions. These dogs run hotter, harder and faster, with relentless drive that suits competitive sport, detection deployment and very active working homes.

    Key Characteristics

    • Athletic, lean and exceptionally fast
    • Higher prey and retrieving drive
    • Outstanding water work and stamina
    • Excels in detection, field trials and sport
    • Best for active, engaged working handlers
    • Bred to US AKC field trial standards

    We Breed Both Lines

At The Watch Dog Den, we work with both British field and American working line Labradors. Every dog is health tested, temperament assessed, and matched honestly to the right home — whether that's competitive sport, detection work or an active family.

    Every puppy includes

    What's Included With Your Puppy

Most Australian breeders hand you a puppy and a piece of paper. We hand you a fully-started working dog with everything you need to set them up for success — and us in your corner for life.

    Full Pedigree Papers

MDBA-registered with verifiable bloodlines tracing back multiple generations.

    Microchipped & Registered

Lifetime microchip registered to you on collection — fully compliant with QLD law.

    Vaccinated & Wormed

First vaccinations (C3/C5), age-appropriate worming schedule, and parasite prevention.

    Vet-Health Checked

Independent veterinary health check with written report before homing.

    DNA Profile & Parentage Verified

DNA profiled and parentage verified — you know exactly what you're buying.

    Started Training Foundation

Every puppy starts crate training, name recognition, lead introduction and basic socialisation before pickup — most breeders don't do this.

    Comprehensive Puppy Pack

Food sample, transition guide, chew toy, blanket with mum's scent, written care instructions and feeding schedule.

    Lifetime Breeder Support

Direct phone access to our team for the dog's entire life — training advice, health questions, and behavioural guidance.

    Written Health Guarantee

Every puppy leaves with a written health guarantee signed by our breeder. We stand behind the genetics we breed — and we put it in writing.

    • 2-year guarantee against debilitating hereditary hip and elbow dysplasia.
    • Replacement puppy from a future litter if a covered hereditary condition is diagnosed.
    • 14-day satisfaction window — full refund if your vet identifies a serious health issue.
    • Lifetime return policy — if circumstances ever change, your puppy comes back to us, no questions asked.

    Comprehensive Genetic Screening

We don't just say "DNA tested." Every breeding sire and dam in our programme is screened for:

    • Hip dysplasia (BVA/AVA scored parents)
    • Elbow dysplasia (BVA/AVA scored parents)
    • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) DNA panel
    • MDR1 drug sensitivity (working line standard)
    • Haemophilia A & B carrier screening
    • Parentage DNA verification

Test results available on request before deposit.

Raised In Our Home — Not In Kennels

Our puppies grow up underfoot in a real family home — exposed daily to children, household noise, other dogs, vacuum cleaners, visitors, and the chaos of normal life. By the time they leave us at 8 weeks, they've already been crate-trained, lead-introduced, sound-proofed, and started on basic obedience by a working-dog trainer.

That's the difference between a puppy that's been "raised in a kennel" and one that's been raised by trainers. You collect a confident, switched-on dog ready to learn — not a blank slate.

    Why choose us

    The Training-First Breeder

We're not a sport kennel chasing IGP titles, and we're not a backyard breeder selling pups out of the laundry. We're working-dog trainers who breed the dogs we wish other breeders were producing — and start them properly before they leave us.

    Trainers First, Breeders Second

Most kennels breed for the show ring or sport titles. We breed for working temperament — and every puppy is started on real obedience and socialisation by a working-dog trainer before you collect them.

    Police, Military & Security Background

Our training methodology is built on real-world protection, detection and personal-protection work — the same standards used by Australian police and security agencies.

    We Pre-Screen Every Home

Working line German Shepherds and Malinois are not for everyone. We use a buyer questionnaire to make sure each puppy goes to a home that can match its drive — that's why our dogs succeed.

Lifetime Support — Not Just A Sale

When you buy from us, you get direct phone access to our team for the dog's entire life. Training advice, behavioural questions, vet referrals, board & train top-ups — we never disappear after collection.

    MDBA Registered & Licenced

Master Dog Breeders & Associates registered, fully licenced under Queensland law. Verifiable pedigrees, every dog accounted for.

    Stud Service Available

Approved working females may be considered for stud service to our proven sires. Pedigree, health clearances and temperament assessment required.
