When should child-safety work begin?

From twelve weeks. Controlled exposure to prams, toddlers, sudden noise and high-pitched voices during the socialisation window builds tolerance for life. Adult dogs absolutely retrain too — it just takes more structure than a clean slate.

Are protection dogs safe around kids?

Yes — that is the whole point of correct training. The dog reads context and only engages on command. Our working shepherds and Malinois live in Gold Coast family homes with toddlers, school-age siblings and revolving playdates.

My dog has already snapped at a child — is it too late?

Not usually, but the clock matters. Most child-related reactivity is fear, over-arousal or guarding behaviour that responds well to structured retraining. The longer the pattern is rehearsed, the harder it is to unwind.

Do you teach the kids too?

Yes — family education is built in. We coach children on safe greetings, body-language reading, no-go zones around food and crates, and how to call the dog away calmly. Two-sided safety, not just dog-side.

Standalone service or part of a wider programme?

Either. Child safety is bundled into every family obedience and protection programme by default, but you can also book a focused short series if a new baby, foster placement or behavioural concern is the trigger.

The vast majority of dog bites to children happen in the family home, with a dog the family already knows and trusts. The cause is almost never a 'bad' dog — it's unclear communication, missed warning signals or a dog never taught how to disengage from over-excited children.

We train the whole family. Children learn safe interaction and body-language reading. The dog learns to handle squeals, hugs and sudden movement with calm tolerance. That's the difference between 'good with kids' and genuinely safe.

The best time to start is before the child arrives — but it's never too late. These are the situations we work with most often.

Prepare the resident dog before the newborn arrives — desensitise to noise, gear and routine changes ahead of time.
